In the heart of Prague’s Modřany, in a noble First Republic villa with four residential units, one of the apartments has undergone a complete transformation. The original 1+1 layout was transformed by interior designer and artist Markéta Daňková into a well-thought-out 2+kk, which now perfectly meets the needs of its owner – elegant single living with enough space for occasional visits from her adult daughter and family dinners for up to eight guests.
Before the renovation, the apartment had a tired look. All that remained were forgotten artifacts – an old, broken sewing machine, worn-out doors and a few picture frames. When their fate seemed sealed, they found new meaning. Instead of ending up in a scrapyard, they became key elements of a new interior that tells the story of the past. This approach, full of respect for the original materials, created a space that is authentic and full of life.
The owner, who inherited this old, empty apartment, wanted an interior with a feminine touch and an atmosphere that blended with an artistic concept. The goal was for the apartment to provide a sufficient experience and opportunity for relaxation. The original layout did not allow for a kitchen, and the bathroom and technical facilities were inadequate.
Interior designer and artist with thirteen years of experience in designing and implementing unique residential and non-residential spaces. She graduated from art education at the University of Ostrava and the IDK School of Interior Design, where she currently lectures. She also teaches interior and furniture design at the Faculty of Wood Processing and Biomaterials at the Czech University of Life Sciences. As part of her doctoral studies, she is dedicated to the use of biocomposites from waste materials for furniture production. She is the founder of the Painted Wallpapers project, the creation of artistically conceived wallpapers.
